Match Report - 26 Sep 2009, Royston Hockey Club Mens 5th XI lost to Stevenage 6th XI
Royston's youth side gave a very strong performance in their first league game of the season. Royston dominated much of the first half with man of the match Josh Montague-Fuller making several surging runs from left half, but had to come from behind twice to go in to the break 2-2. Simon and Josh Hughes linked well to find Steve Gourd in the D who beat a defender and neatly slot home for the first. Montague-Fuller, John Gourd and Josh Hughes built from Royston's defence to set up Steve Gourd with Royston's second. Mike Priest made a number of good saves to ensure Royston stayed in the game.
The second half saw the home team under more pressure with Stevenage scoring early and then a short corner saw them stretch their lead to 4-2. Royston never let spirits drop and forced their own short corner after well worked play involving Bailey Farmer, Miles Jackson and Oliver Stewart. Paul Visagie was on hand to slot home a slipped pass from Simon Hughes. Stevenage made it 5-3 with ten minutes to go through a wicked deflection, but Royston drove forward once more and won another short corner that was struck home by Simon Hughes. Royston tried to keep the pressure on until the end, but time ran out on them.
